Dec 23, Assaph Mehr rated it really liked it Shelves: contemporary , crime. A nice short story, about a Dutch assassin on one of her first cases. Carefully thought out details, atmospheric descriptions of Amsterdam, and an interesting point of view made this an enjoyable read.
Jan 23, Gregor Xane rated it really liked it Shelves: This is a short story, so it's hard to talk about what I liked about it without giving too much away. I'll just say that the attention to detail is fantastic I like learning about how things work and that this story stimulates the same pleasure center in your brain that a good heist story tickles. So, having little to no experience with suspense fiction, I did not know what to expect.
For the uninitiated, such as myself, the author does a great job explaining tools an Until now, the closest I came to reading crime fiction was Roberto Bolano's The Skating Rink.
For the uninitiated, such as myself, the author does a great job explaining tools and procedures I would not have known otherwise. To explain: I tried reading an unrelated book once, but it was full of references and speech I could not relate to. With the Locked Room, nevertheless, Mr. Halm not only pulled me in to the story, but he also gave me the right amount of subtle explanations as to what was what.
Katla came across as effective in her line of work, and well-versed in the tools of her trade. Her lack of conscience was clearly portrayed, and the entire story seemed completely plausible. I'll say congratulations to Katla on a well executed mission, and to Martyn Halm on creating a lethal female character. I ran across this author accidentally.
I enjoyed his post on a Goodreads group, pulled up his profile and was intrigued by descriptions of his works. I'm always looking for fun reads involving "bad" guys and assassins fits that category nicely. Block's Keller series sets the standard, of course, and Halm ranks right up there.
Katla, or LKE Enterprises as she calls herself, specializes in killing targets in a such way that they look accidental or natural. Coming up with credible scenarios necessar I ran across this author accidentally. Coming up with credible scenarios necessarily challenges the authors and this locked-room novella available for free for your Kindle from Amazon is certainly as good as anything Carr might have come up with.
I like the way Halm integrated some of the newer technologies into the plot. A good story and enjoyable way to spend time while waiting for something. My only caveat is that, unlike Keller and Dot who go to great lengths to conceal their identity, Katla meets directly with prospective clients. That would seem to make her quite vulnerable if things blow up.
Nevertheless, I intend to read all Halm's books. They have the added benefit of being set in Amsterdam, a great city. I did tire of the word anthracite in this story, however.
Get them. Nov 15, Norm Hamilton rated it liked it. Her business, Loki Enterprises, specializes in assassinations that cannot be traced or recognized as murders. While she usually opts for clients that have no emotional involvement in the outcome, opting for straight business agreements, she makes and exception in this case. Halm's depictions and descriptions keep us involved throughout. Martyn V. Halm is an experienced writer who has a strong capacity for description, dialogue and authenticity.
This book, like the others in the Amsterdam Assassin Series, contains a glossary to help with terminology that adds to the legitimacy of the text.

The opinions I have expressed are my own. Jul 17, Rowena Hoseason rated it really liked it. To repeatedly get away with murder for money, a female assassin must be calculating, careful and somewhat cold-hearted. Katla Sieltjes is all of the above, and much more. In the Killfiles short stories she comes across as an intelligent, accomplished and cautious professional. Skilled, trained and experienced in dealing death to her commercial targets. These stories are absolutely stuffed full of detailed description of the mechanics of murder, even down to the brand of aerosol cleaner Katla uses to remove possible fingerprints from contaminated surfaces.
Locked Room: A Katla KillFile
For some readers, there will be excessive detail, and at times the writing can feel almost like an actual black-ops report rather than gripping fiction. It's almost clinically detached; absorbed in accurate description to the nth degree. So look elsewhere for deft emotional development or incisive social commentary. These shorts were an entertaining interlude and a welcome introduction to an intriguing character. They work as stand-alone stories in any order, so you can try any if you want to meet Katla before getting into the full Amsterdam Assassin books.

In this Kill File Katla is charged with the task of revenging a husbands loss by eliminating the doctor he blamed for the death of his wife. This being the first kill file I had read I found it immediately engaging and given the nature of short stories it is generally not possible to build a detailed plot but sufficient information was given to inform the reader of the work Katla was doing and why she was doing it, and like the full length novels she ensures the details are all worked out and nothing is left to chance.
The assassination was one of the most brutal scenes I had read until reading the massacre that features in the first Katla full length novel Reprobrate. Another excellent read and whilst his work is not yet mainstream I would urge you to check Halm out. Jan 11, Amber Foxx rated it really liked it.

I appreciate it when indie authors make their work easily available through multiple channels, so I thought should mention that. Halm has the remarkable ability to engage the reader. His research is thorough.
